Product details

Ahmed Arif was born in Diyarbakir and began publishing in leftist literary magazines as a high school student in 1943. An early poem he wrote as a philosophy student brought him fame and landed him in prison. It described the extrajudicial execution of 33 Kurdish smugglers by the military, a scandal that shook the republic. Arif was charged and imprisoned multiple times for communist propaganda. Influenced by Nâzim Hikmet and André Gide, Arif developed his own style that combined the language of modern forms with the myths and epics of the Kurdish mountains, incorporating the diverse dialects and languages of Anatolia. Through his poems, he created a poetic map of his homeland. However, his political stance hindered a promising artistic career in the repressive climate of the 1950s and 60s. Arif made a living as a proofreader and editor, occasionally publishing in literary journals. It wasn't until 1968 that his only poetry collection, Hasretinden Prangalar Eskittim, was published, which saw countless editions and pirated copies. His poems, however, found their way into pop culture songs and legendary films by Yilmaz Güney.
