George Smiley, head of the British intelligence service, is supposed to resign after a failed operation. However, it turns out that one of his men is a double agent secretly working for Moscow. Smiley sets out to track him down and, while in disguise, becomes a "mole" himself, finding himself in the heart of the great adversary during the Cold War.
