Product details
The Queen's Gambit (1. d4 d5 2. c4) is a very old opening that is mentioned in manuscripts from the late 15th century. However, it only gained significant popularity with the rise of positional play after Steinitz and reached a peak of popularity in the 1920s and 30s. Although other systems have since taken the leading role, the Queen's Gambit is still very commonly encountered in tournaments of all levels. It is considered a sound and reliable opening for players aiming for a solid game structure. The classification as a gambit seems hardly justified, as White does not take any real risks: if Black accepts the gambit, the extra pawn cannot be claimed without serious disadvantages. With 2. c4, White begins the fight for the central squares d5 and e4, and various responses from Black have emerged as a result.
