Abstract: The literature of heroic epiphany uses an intensive and targeted presentation of physical and psychological violence. The aim of this work is to rediscover the image of the brave, violent hero in the Song of Roland, to justify it and to explain its function. It is not my intention to use modern clichés of the bloodthirsty Middle Ages without reflection. Rather, this work is intended to build bridges of understanding, to take into account the historical circumstances and religious views of the poetic period of origin and thus make the depiction of extreme violence in medieval literature understandable.
