The book, first published in 1929, occupies a key position among Jünger's writings, even in relation to the later, significantly altered version "The Adventurous Heart. Figures and Caprices" (1938). It originates from a time when the literary aggressions of this author were still closely linked to his national-revolutionary journalism. Jünger's proximity to and divergence from other literary movements, especially those of surrealism, are nowhere as clearly expressed as here. Jünger had already emerged as an author of war books and had gained recognition. However, with this work, which still shows a connection to contemporary history, Jünger also transforms from a war writer into a literary figure.
