Product details

Suggestions from friends, acquaintances, and those interested in local history have encouraged the Heimat- und Kulturverein e.V. to undertake the publication of this illustrated book. The pictorial documentation aims to encompass not only the city of Wolmirstedt but also the neighboring communities. Our goal was to create a documentation that includes only explanatory or in-depth information in the text contributions. The images are meant to speak for themselves and impact the viewer with their uniqueness. Another consideration was to convey the urban development situation that shaped the city and the villages until the mid-1950s of this century. The viewer should be able to experience the once-existing, continuous building structure. Therefore, we refrained from depicting five- and ten-story buildings that currently characterize parts of the city. The aim is to make the old, the past—beautiful in its own way, often unique and irreplaceable—accessible again through the images, thereby documenting the history of this self-contained residential settlement. This extensive period in the nearly 1000-year history of the city is no longer known to many of our residents today. The official and civic buildings, the inns and commercial houses, the farmsteads, and especially the small, narrow, modestly furnished houses of workers and small craftsmen gave the former agrarian small town its distinctive character.
