Product details

Money appears in many different forms, each of which brings about its own social practices. Christian Thiel explores this largely unexamined topic using the example of regional currencies. These privately issued currencies, valid only in specific regions, aim to encourage better moral, social, or ecological behavior among people. Can such a (re)programming of money succeed? What actors with what intentions are behind this? The author analyzes these questions through a historical and ethnographic approach. Various concepts of money emerge, which have been promoted by monetary reform movements since the early 20th century as solutions to crisis-driven modernization phenomena. A qualitative case study examines how this alternative currency is used in everyday life within one of these private money experiments.
