From the very beginning, Christianity has been caught in the tension between the questions of whether education belongs to faith or faith belongs to education. It recognizes the danger of fundamentalism, but it relies on enlightenment. The New Testament sets the course for this. Faith does not depend on intelligence, but it does provoke thought. From Jesus, Paul, and John, it can be seen that faith and reason, ethos and conviction, prophecy and wisdom are in a close interrelationship. This is the impetus for an educational program that still has its test ahead of it. Viewing Christianity as a religion of education is the thesis of this book. It stands against any form of fundamentalism, however subtle, and equally clearly against a position that seeks to exclude religion from the discourse on education, whether by invoking the neutrality of the democratic state.
