The police are supposed to secure cultural certainties as an organ of German mainstream society. At the same time, the lifestyles of ethnic minorities and socially marginalized groups express a cultural difference that often leads to alienation or even fear, causing these individuals to become strangers and outsiders over the course of their lives. As a result, the police act as representatives of an authority that is frequently experienced as exclusionary or even discriminatory by groups on the fringes of society. The resulting conflicts in the operational everyday life of police officers – including with asylum seekers, Turkish corner shop owners, drug addicts, prostitutes, and the homeless – are the subject of this vivid and highly relevant book in terms of social politics and social sciences.
