In his perhaps most influential work, Slavoj Žižek attempts to answer the question of whether and how we can still speak of ideology. At the time of its publication in 1989, the answer to this question was by no means self-evident: In many places, it was assumed that ideologies had come to an end. Žižek, on the other hand, argues that a new vocabulary is necessary to describe modern ideological phenomena: Only a productive exchange of Hegelian dialectics and Lacanian psychoanalysis can make the subtle forms of ideology readable that characterize modern capitalism. With "The Sublime Object of Ideology," Žižek has produced a standard work that extends far beyond the boundaries of the discipline and is particularly relevant in times when fake news and conspiracy theories are on the rise.
