Since the existence of humans, there has been a desire to learn about the distant or near future. The practice of oracles has remained widespread over the centuries, despite the Christianization of the church. A specific branch of oracular practices is certainly the exploration of the future through cards. One of the oldest card oracles is that of the French occultist and tarot researcher Jean-François Alliette (1738 - 1791), who became known and famous under his pseudonym "Etteilla." Etteilla was the first to assign a system of interpretation to his cards, thereby contributing to the development of tarot cards over generations and influencing many other figures, such as Marie Anne Lenormand. His books are considered standard works in cartomancy. As early as 1788, he founded the Association of Interpreters of the Book of Thoth and published his own tarot in 1789, which he called "Grand Etteilla.".
