Through around 50 caricatures spanning two thousand years, Andreas Platthaus narrates the aesthetic and, above all, political development of this art form. He highlights the struggle between religious beliefs and the Enlightenment impetus of caricaturists as a central theme in a dramatic narrative, which we see reaching its tragic climax with the terrorist attack on the editorial office of "Charlie Hebdo" on January 7, 2015. However, one of the earliest known caricatures from the Roman imperial period also dealt with the theme of religion and mocked Christianity. Alongside individual analyses of the respective drawings, a history of their medium, the press, is told. This is not only in relation to the major cultures of political caricature, such as Great Britain, France, and Germany, but also with insights into other countries.
