Wang Xiaobo tells the story of a man who uses wit and irony to resist the absurd logic of a dictatorship while seeking freedom in sexuality. When 21-year-old Wang Er is sent to the countryside during the Cultural Revolution, he faces harassment from his superiors and hostility from the villagers, who eventually accuse him of having an affair with the five-years-older doctor, Chen Qinyang. The clever student realizes that any denial would be futile, and the two have no choice but to let the rumors come true. Thus, they embark on a passionate affair, for which they must justify themselves with detailed "confessions" to the local authorities. Years later, Wang Er, now a university lecturer, reluctantly bows to the demands for conformity and uniformity within the communist machinery. At forty, disillusioned and divorced, he embarks on his own quest for lost time, recounting the absurd fate of his Trotskyist boss, his mentor who knew he would not survive the Cultural Revolution, and his girlfriend, who ponders the banality of their existence with him.
