Wang Xiaobo tells the story of a man who uses wit and irony to resist the absurd logic of a dictatorship while seeking freedom in sexuality. At forty, disillusioned and divorced, he embarks on his own quest for lost time, recounting the absurd fate of his Trotskyist boss, his mentor who knew he would not survive the Cultural Revolution, and his girlfriend, who ponders the banality of their existence with him.
