Born on February 1, 1950, in Wiesbaden, her father was a Russian emigrant and engineer, while her mother was a dancer at the Hessian State Theatre. Tatjana Hauptmann attended the Werkkunstschule Offenbach, completed a three-year graphic apprenticeship at the Werkkunstschule Wiesbaden, and joined ZDF in 1970, where she illustrated the Mainzelmännchen among other projects. In 1977, she brought a large portfolio under her arm to the Diogenes Verlag booth at the Frankfurt Book Fair. Inside the portfolio was 'A Day in the Life of Dorothea Wutz'. She gained international fame with the 'Great Fairy Tale Book', which she worked on for several years. For Diogenes, she illustrated, among other works, 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn' as well as Irving's 'A Sound Like Someone Trying Not to Make a Sound'.
