This text provides a detailed description of the Roman troops that were completely annihilated in a kettle battle by rebellious Germans in the area that the Romans called "Saltus Teutoburgiensis," or the Teutoburg Forest, in the autumn of 9 AD. The legionaries and auxiliary troops under the command of the supreme commander of the Rhine army, Publius Quinctilius Varus, are reconstructed as realistically as possible based on the current state of historical and archaeological research, with particular consideration given to the ground finds from Augustan military camps in Germania and the battlefield at Kalkriese.
