It is a narrow, inconspicuous spot on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean, traversed by deserts and barren mountains. Its inhabitants live in the shadow of great powers that impose their rule over the land. And yet, it is precisely here that, over the course of a millennium in ancient times, the events unfold that are depicted in the most well-known book on Earth - the Bible - from which two world religions emerge: Judaism and Christianity. Around 1900, photographers traveled to the most significant sites in this region. Their images, taken before industrialization and mass tourism, convey a sense of a long-gone cosmos: the biblical era.
