Although yoga has long been an intercultural term, the historical written sources of yoga, aside from the Yoga Sutras of Patañjali, have hardly been subjected to critical translations. This is particularly true for the Gheranda Samhita, the collection of Gheranda, which, along with the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, represents one of the most important texts of post-classical yoga with its archaic features. The Gheranda Samhita is a unique little compendium: it contains the sum of a wealth of practices and, albeit only formally, connects heterogeneous materials into a unified yoga. It is, as is not uncommon in classical Indian texts, written in a bound language, mostly in the epic meter of loka. The framework: Gheranda speaks to his student Chakrapani. The Gheranda Samhita is undoubtedly, like the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, an inconsistent work.
