The invocation of the name Jesus is a form of prayer that may be more familiar to Christians of the Eastern Church than to those of the Western Church. In the Orthodox Church, it is known as the Jesus Prayer and is widely practiced among the faithful. The name Jesus is a concrete and effective means of transforming people into their hidden, innermost, and ultimate reality. With the name of Jesus in our hearts and on our lips, we should approach all people—on the street, in shops, in the office, in factories, on buses, while waiting in line—especially those who are bothersome and unsympathetic to us. We should pronounce the name of Jesus over all of them, for that is their true name. The author of this little book is rooted in both the Christian Western and Orthodox traditions, resulting from 25 years of meditation and as a fruit of his personal inner experience.
