The Herbal Lexicon by Johann Christoph Ende was likely created around 1680. A copy of this valuable manuscript has been preserved in the State Library of Berlin. It features over 200 herbs that are not only described in detail but also accompanied by numerous notes on healing and alleviating diseases and ailments. The selection ranges from aloe to wormwood - most of the herbs are still well-known and widely used today, and their healing properties have hardly changed. The illustrations are woodcuts, a unique technique. The volume from the Insel-Bücherei, produced in collaboration with the manuscript department of the State Library, presents 40 special herbs; the texts are transcribed and made readable, and the volume showcases the unique book decorations of the original edition.
