Crocodiles are reptiles and have been on Earth for a very long time. Their distinctive scaly skin protects them from injuries. Even though crocodiles lie quietly in the water most of the time, they keep everything in sight and can suddenly spring into action. Crocodile eggs are kept warm in a nest made of sand by the sun, and the incubation temperature determines whether a male or female hatches from an egg.
