Full of humor and self-irony at times, and thoughtful and melancholic at others: The poems of the German-Jewish writer Lessie Sachs have unjustly faded into near oblivion today. Born in 1896 in Breslau, Lessie (Valeska Luise) Sachs moved to the then art metropolis of Munich to pursue an art degree. During the tumultuous events of the November Revolution of 1918/19 in Bavaria, Lessie Sachs became politically active, joined the KPD, and participated in the Munich Soviet Republic. The suppression of the Soviet Republic led to her arrest, conviction, and years of surveillance. After a prison stay, she was expelled from Bavaria. Starting in 1930, Lessie Sachs published poems and short prose in renowned newspapers such as the Vossische, the Neue Wiener Tagblatt, and Simplicissimus. The rise of the National Socialists destroyed her work.
