Multilingualism is a reality today, especially in schools: teachers are faced with the fact that some of their students are not native German speakers. Many children grow up multilingual, while some only learn German in school. Teachers, educational planners, didacticians, and parents often perceive this as a burden that lowers the educational standards of schools. However, multilingualism is a valuable asset, offering a wealth of languages and teaching opportunities. To effectively address this, teachers need to know about the languages their students bring to the classroom. This book addresses this need: it provides stimulating and linguistically grounded information about the languages most commonly spoken by students in Germany, including Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Hindi, Persian, Turkish, Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian, and Greek.
