The Algerian resistance fighter Amîr Amr Abd al-Qdir al-azir (1808 - 1883) wrote his first theological treatise during his five-year imprisonment in France in the mid-19th century - "The Sharp Scissors for Cutting Off the Tongue of Those Who Disparage the Religion of Islam through Slander and Heresy." In this work, he attempts to prove the truth claim of the revelation by presenting the nature and function of reason as a method to establish the existence of God and prophecy as necessary truths. This study, through the analysis of this treatise, simultaneously engages with three different contexts: colonialism in North Africa, the Islamic reform debate of the 19th century, and the centuries-old intra-Islamic discussion about the relationship between rationality and revelation.
