Das Paradies der Ungeliebten
German, Robert Menasse, 2006Product details
The piece is set in Denmark, here, in the biotope of state political decay. Politics has abdicated, politicians have no power anymore, only offices. The characters - the helpless prime minister, the obsessed vice, the demagogic opposition leader, the failed actor who has switched to politics but cannot credibly portray a politician - all bear the names of the Danish European champions from 1992. Yet they do not master Europe. They allow themselves to be elected - only to then, lethargically or vainly, shift their responsibility onto the constraints of the situation. A political fever dream, confusing political phrases with what they once meant, plans an assassination. But what is a political murder when politics is already dead? A historical quote? A farce?.
