Product details

The sound of the piano can be influenced by several pedals. Today, two to three pedals are usually standard. The right pedal is called the sustain pedal (from Italian forte: strong, loud). It lifts all the dampers off the strings so that the struck notes continue to sound even after the keys are released. The left pedal is called the soft pedal (from Italian piano: soft), also known as the quiet pedal, shift, or una corda (Italian for "one string"). In a grand piano, the entire mechanism is shifted a few millimeters to the left or right, so that the hammers no longer strike all three strings of a string choir, but only two or one string. This also changes the timbre, as there are now strings that are excited not by direct striking but by resonance. Reprint of the original edition, 3rd edition from 1892.
