The relationship between the individual and society has been a central concern of sociology from the very beginning. This book offers a new theoretical and empirical approach to understanding this relationship. At its core are the roles of individuals as members of the audience. These roles include being a patient in the healthcare system, a defendant in the legal system, a newspaper reader in the mass media system, or a voter in the political system. These roles are the focus of the investigation: How do they manifest in terms of the enactment of society by individuals and the societal shaping of individuals? In other words, it is about the audience of society.
