Austromarxism - the Austrian school of Marxism in the first half of the 19th century - is inseparably linked to the names of Otto Bauer, Max Adler, and Rudolf Hilferding. Otto Bauer officially propagated Austromarxism from 1918 to 1934. During this time, he served as the deputy chairman of the Social Democratic Workers' Party. His succinct call: "Don't smash the heads, win the minds!" reflects the strategy of the Austromarxists. The Workers' Party should come to power through the power of persuasion and democratic means. Only when the new socialist consciousness has been created will the time for social revolution come. As a social theory, Austromarxism seeks a third way between orthodox Marxism and the radical left on one side and revisionism on the other.
