This is especially true when others are involved, whether as active or passive helpers. Here, the gray areas are vast and the definitions challenging, particularly since many individuals who consider suicide may actually long for a meaningful life more than they seek death as recognized members of society. Even in ancient times, suicide and euthanasia were punishable offenses. By the onset of the Middle Ages, suicide was already deemed immoral. Those who attempted suicide were punished, and their families were penalized as well. This practice reached its peak during the Third Reich.
