The central theme of this book is the relationship between the legal system and the social system. Law operates within society, enacts society, fulfills a social function, and is differentiated for its own autopoietic reproduction in this function. This is at least what the theory presented here claims. Furthermore, the question is raised as to how the society in which this occurs should be understood; for there is no sufficient theory of society available for this purpose.
