In discussing the role of ritual, Hans-Hermann Hohmann continues his studies and proposals for a humanistic Freemasonry. Within this concept, ritual is by no means the entirety of Freemasonry for him. However, it is what distinguishes Freemasonry from other organizations. The ritual does not possess a revelatory character, does not convey salvation teachings, and has no magical quality. It does not establish a religion and should not take on any substitute religious functions. The ritual is a specific medium of communication. It provides food for thought, opens the mason's consciousness to perceive previously hidden layers of personality, teaches through symbols and ritual actions, and offers a spiritual foundation that encompasses the whole person of the brother in the social and discourse-ethical practice of the lodge. The result is a Freemasonry.
