Product details

They wanted entirely new houses at the Bauhaus, but the new person who was to inhabit them was still missing. Conveniently, this new person was being produced at that time in Soviet Russia. So, at the beginning of the 1930s, some of the most talented young German architects set off eastward, including the Frankfurt city planner Ernst Mey and the recently dismissed Bauhaus director Hannes Meyer. They were preceded by stars like Le Corbusier and Mendelssohn. Unfortunately, Stalin soon declared modern architecture a capitalist deviation—thus, the idealistic architects disappeared into labor camps, were shot without hesitation, or, if they were lucky, returned after the war to a completely transformed German building landscape. A forgotten piece of architectural history that Ursula Muscheler brings to light.
