The Castle, Kafka's last major novel, tells the story of K., who is commissioned as a land surveyor by the count of a rural castle. However, K.'s attempts to enter the castle fail just as his efforts to find his place in the village do; and his struggle against the omnipresent, anonymous, and impenetrable bureaucracy of the castle administration ends for him in a thicket of secrets and humiliations.
