Das Unternehmen Swarovski im Nationalsozialismus

Product details
The company Swarovski had already supported political organizations aiming for a Führer state before Austria's annexation. Alfred Swarovski was the head of the Gau Economic Chamber of Tyrol-Vorarlberg, Daniel Swarovski was an "honorary illegal" member of the NSDAP, and Friedrich Swarovski Jr. was a denouncer. Wilhelm, Manfred, Friedrich, and their son, as well as Daniel Jr., joined the party as early as 1932/33. The company closely monitored its workforce politically and kept records in their personnel files of who became an NSDAP member and in what capacity. The military financed the transformation of the company into a profitable armaments business. Its total revenue doubled in 1944 compared to 1937. In the immediate post-war period, the company outsourced abrasives, optics, and reflectors to new enterprises, leading to the formation of the Swarovski Group. After 1945, the company owners believed that it was a duty for a businessman to be a member of the NSDAP in the interest of the business and to adapt to all power structures. The denazification of the Swarovski family is a representative example of the lenient treatment of former National Socialists from the economic elite, who had influential networks and were essential for reconstruction.
