The psychoanalyst J. Laplanche and the philosopher J.-B. Pontalis have thoroughly examined the entire psychoanalytic literature and compiled it into a vocabulary of psychoanalysis. This vocabulary not only defines the terms introduced by Freud and some of his students, which have now spread across the globe, but also discusses their origins, transformations, and current status in order to decipher their significance within psychoanalytic theory and practice. The entire conceptual apparatus of psychoanalysis is thus analyzed from three perspectives: history, structure, and issues.
