The principle of universal jurisdiction has long been recognized in international criminal law, but a comparable connecting principle is lacking in international private law. The author uses this as an opportunity to justify the admissibility and appropriateness of a universal connecting principle in private law through a comparative study of both legal fields and taking into account various legal systems, while also outlining its contours. This provides civil courts with the opportunity to conduct damage compensation proceedings in certain cases for serious violations of international law and human rights, regardless of the existence of a territorial-personal or substantive domestic connection, in the interest of the international community of states.
