Designers played a crucial role in the development of modernism in Vienna during the interwar period. This publication presents new research on female designers, ceramicists, fashion designers, graphic artists, landscape architects, photographers, art historians, and patrons. Through their examples, it illustrates how traditional gender roles were challenged during the interwar years and highlights the significant impact these women had on Viennese modernism. They confronted existing prejudices and created new visual languages to successfully advance their careers. At the same time, they contributed to a critical discourse on women's emancipation.

Among the designers of Viennese modernism were Emilie Flöge, Mathilde Flögl, Jacqueline Groag, Fanny Harlfinger-Zakucka, Yella Hertzka, Else Hofmann, Hilda Jesser, Maria Likarz, Madame d'Ora, Pauline Metternich-Sándor, Bertha Pappenheim, Marie Reidemeister-Neurath, Lisl Weil, Vally Wieselthier, Helene Wolf, and Berta Zuckerkandl.
