Product details
In May 2009, John (Iwan) Demjanjuk was deported from the USA to Germany. Six months later, a criminal trial against him began in Munich: he was allegedly involved in the murder of 28,000 Jews at the Sobibór extermination camp as a member of the "Trawniki" (volunteers for the SS). Hundreds of journalists from all continents followed the start of the trial against the native Ukrainian. The "last major Nazi trial" was seen as a global event from a media perspective. However, interest quickly waned as the sessions were slow and unremarkable. Ultimately, the regional court sentenced Demjanjuk to five years in prison for complicity in murder in May 2011. But since the parties involved appealed, he was placed in a nursing home in Upper Bavaria, where he died in March 2012. Rainer Volk has followed and analyzed the trial as a journalist and historian from the very beginning.
