The failure of the Weimar Republic is closely linked to the problems and weaknesses that characterized the first major experiment of a parliamentary government system in Germany. However, serious parliamentary crises also emerged in other European states between the world wars. Thomas Raithel systematically compares the parliamentarism of the Weimar Republic with that of late Third Republic France for the first time, particularly focusing on the two national inflation crises of the 1920s. During the German hyperinflation, the parliamentary system fell into a serious crisis, and the government and the Reich President were able to expand their regulatory regime. In contrast, French parliamentarism weathered its inflation crisis much better. Starting from a description of the parliamentary processes, the author analyzes the developments.
