The volume describes the history and culture of the area that the Romans called Germania, from the 1st century BC to the 6th century AD. There likely was no single people who referred to themselves as Germans, held together by language and culture. Instead, there is evidence of a diversity of peoples in formation. From the region of Germania, they emerged through multiple fractures and new beginnings into the altered ethnic geography of medieval Europe.
