Product details

In 1950, one in four citizens of the GDR was a displaced person, and by 1961, it was one in five. By the end of the 1980s, 3.7 million so-called resettlers lived in the GDR with their children born after their displacement, where their fate was largely a taboo subject. How did the SED manage to enforce this taboo, and how did the displaced persons themselves react to this act of arbitrary historical disposal? What were the bilateral relations of the GDR with its eastern neighboring countries from which the displaced persons came? Were they truly marked by international socialist solidarity, or were there also entrenched resentments here, as in the West? Finally, how did the special German-German relations manifest at the level of regional associations? Did they really harbor as much potential for conflict as the SED feared, and what could the State Security do about it?.
