What conditions exist when linguistic information remains unrealized on the linguistic surface but is still understood? What information is implicitly understood at all? What type of calculations are responsible for drawing conclusions about what is implicitly stated? These questions are at the center of interdisciplinary work that, with a cognitive science perspective, defines the boundary between explicit and implicit realization of linguistic information. The author focuses on a wide range of verb complexes and their grammatical, lexical-semantic, and conceptual properties in the implicit omission of linguistic information. Initially, the status of unrealized event participants is examined using examples from anticausatives, particle verbs, (unaccusative) intransitive verbs, and middle constructions.
