The present cultural history traces the transdisciplinary development of the psychosomatic discourse since the 18th century, thereby filling a research gap. The 'whole person' is not only a thematic focus in medicine but also significantly in literature and philosophy. These processes of exchange between literature and knowledge are concretely captured, where literature appears as both a cause of illness and a remedy, as well as a method of representation and understanding. The historically systematic argumentation of the study divides the psychosomatic discourse into five central elements: 1.
