On all battlefields of the First World War, technology was a determining factor. In particular, on the German side, members of the air forces such as Oswald Boelcke, Manfred von Richthofen, and Ernst Udet were regarded as national heroes. Between 1914 and 1945, they were stylized into stars of the war in the extensive aviation literature. The study illuminates how these aviators became a projection surface for the general public.
