Product details
This study addresses medieval Bible translation, which is not only a cultural-historical document of primary importance but also uniquely documents the linguistic development of German. Using a corpus of translations from the 14th to the early 16th century, it demonstrates techniques of German Bible translations, particularly from the late Middle Ages and the Early Modern period. The focus is on the Bremen Evangelistar, a lectionary from the mid-14th century. For comparison, five additional translations are included, including Luther's September Testament (1522). Based on an innovative translation studies approach, the analysis examines the methods of transferring Latin infinitives, participles, gerunds, and subordinate clauses. The findings provide insight into the methodological diversity.
