Cultural development is necessarily accompanied by a progressive suppression of interpersonal aggression. In this process, part of this aggression transforms into a form of guilt consciousness, a conscience that is felt as a diffuse sense of lack. For Freud, this "discontent in civilization" is nothing less than the price of civilizational progress, which individuals pay as a loss of happiness alongside an increase in feelings of guilt.
