In his essay published in 1927, Sigmund Freud examines the origin of religion. According to him, religion is an infantile reaction of humans to the threats posed by the outside world, from which the idea of a protective, all-powerful father emerges. In religion, this desire is fulfilled, but the fulfillment of the desire remains merely a fantasy, an illusion that gradually dissolves with the progress of enlightenment and ultimately leads to the decline of religious belief.
