Since 1920, Hugo von Hofmannsthal's mystery play based on a template by Hans Sachs has been performed at the Salzburg Festival: At an opulent feast of the wealthy Everyman, Death appears to lead the host before God's judgment seat. Desperately, Everyman seeks a companion for this difficult journey to the grave, but no one is willing to follow him. Only when his good deeds appear in person and he returns to faith can he finally die as a repentant convert.
