Product details

When Bernhard Moitessier abandoned a well-funded solo nonstop race around the world in 1969, which he was almost certain to win, and instead sailed into the solitude of the Tahitian islands rather than heading for the finish line, the whole world shook its head in disbelief. All alone and without stopping, he had sailed around the three great capes - Cape of Good Hope, Cape Leeuwin, and Cape Horn - when he turned back, renouncing fame and the prize money. This book provides the background to his decision. Moitessier vividly recounts the external events of his journey while also offering insight into his thought process and the inner reflection inspired by the magnificent nature surrounding him. The wildlife of the three great oceans, the sky over the southern hemisphere, the struggle for survival of the small boat - Moitessier tells these stories as vividly as no solo sailor before him.
