All cultural practices are embodied: they are inscribed with the tension unit of bodily experience, physical action, and cultural meaning. From cognitive sciences to cultural studies, embodiment has become a central research topic. This volume takes an interdisciplinary perspective on exemplary practices and rituals of the body and aims to counteract a looming new dualism between bodily and cultural embodiment. Biological organism, conscious experience, and cultural traditions are to emerge in their interrelations, thereby making it clear that meaning is a phenomenon that undermines the Cartesian separation of mind and body.
