The volume develops a consistent civil society concept for promoting civic engagement in the citizen municipality based on extensive practical research projects. This concept features a theory-based socio-political guiding principle that relates to the local society with its various fields of actors, as well as a political framework that is operationalized in a series of guiding principles focused on practice. To this end, theoretical foundations from the discourses of civil society, citizen municipality, welfare mix, governance, and socially-oriented social work are drawn upon, all of which have an undeniable connection to the promotion of civic engagement, yet have hardly been considered in a coherent manner and utilized effectively for engagement promotion. The central theme is the question of the future of democracy.
